I started teaching a Firefighter I/II class in January. It has been a very educational experience for both me and those in the class. While I felt my skills and knowledge were kept up to date I was amazed at the amount of little things I learned.
I've served on our volunteer fire department for 15 years and have seen and experienced quite a bit in all those years. It never ceases to amaze me how much one can learn. Even if it means covering the same thing you've covered umpteen times. If you are receptive to learning and approach each training session with an open mind and a willingness to learn than you will ALWAYS pick up something new. It may be something as simple as just reminding you about something you knew but forgot.
By teaching this course I've improved my skills tremendously. For starters I didn't want to seem like I didn't know what I was talking about so I bet I put more time and effort into the class studying than the students did. I wanted to make sure that I would teach them the correct ways and give them the information they need to start their career in the fire service.
There is nothing more satisfying than teaching someone. Ever since I started I would go to the schools every year to teach fire prevention. Going there is one of my favorite things to do. A few years ago I became an Instructor I and then last year took my Instructor II/III.
While I enjoy teaching the FF I/II class I have to admit that I am looking forward to it being over. I've devoted 2-3 nights a week to teaching this class with several Saturdays thrown in, not to mention a couple more hours each week to prepare for the lessons, grade papers and other things. My wife is more than ready for me to be able to spend a few more nights at home with her and the kids.
