National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW), which is January 10-16, 2010, provides an important opportunity to continue vaccination efforts. During the week, U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) Administrator Kelvin J. Cochran will reach out to the fire service and first responders in all 50 states to ensure that they have taken steps to vaccinate themselves as well as their families.

“Being vaccinated for both seasonal influenza and the H1N1 influenza is an important way to secure the well being of our first responder workforce, their families and most importantly the residents of their communities for whom they provide emergency medical care,” Cochran said. “I encourage all fire service leaders, fire service organizations and firefighters to join with me and participate in the National Influenza Vaccination Week.”

One of the many goals for NIVW is to engage unique audiences who may not be vaccinated. Every year, certain days during NIVW are designated to highlight the importance of vaccination for specific groups, such as health care workers or children. By targeting first responders this year, the USFA and its federal partners like the Department of Health and Human Services are ensuring that our nation’s first line of defense is even more prepared to support the communities they serve.
