GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ) ―
As storms came through Maryland Wednesday night, an Anne Arundel County hospital ran into major problems.
Alex DeMetrick reports heavy rains flooded the emergency room at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
County fire spokesman Capt. Harry Steiner says emergency services received a call for assistance from the Glen Burnie hospital around 9 p.m.
Much of the area around the hospital lost power and the hospital had to run on generator power.
As the hospital took in water, they had to stop taking ambulances. EMTs were diverted to other nearby hospitals as the medical center went on mini-disaster status.
"Everyone is very busy, and we're fully staffed. It's warm and we hope to keep people as comfortable as possible," said Allison Eatough with Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
The power is now back on at the hospital and the flood waters have been cleaned out of the emergency room. The hospital is fully functional.
The storm also uprooted trees around the region.
Thousands around Maryland lost power throughout the course of the storm. At the height of the storm, around 80,000 people were left without power. About 2,000 BGE customers remained without power in Maryland as of 4 p.m. Thursday.
