Ok so today the tones went out, dispatched out to a dumpster fire. I went out with one other person on the truck from station 2. We arrived first on scene, the driver hit the pump and i grabbed the bumper line and started putting water on the fire. When Eng. 21 Arrived I had someone on my back. after everything was done 3 or 4 people were telling me how i should always pack out when going to any type of fire like that. Well until this afternoon i didn't even know how to put the mask and airpack on the driver on my truck knew i didn't know how and still instructed me to take the line. Im assuming he did this because he felt it would be safe. anyhow, now i know how and from now on i will be wearing the pack when i am on the line. Aside from that i was so excited today because this was the first fire i have ever put out by myself, from start to finish.

So i will write more later off to work now.

well said Vic,.........Ladder 49 and backdraft, is hollywood, were you see Kurt Russell and Phoenix not wearing their packs, there is no way you can do anything at a fire without your pack. if i even go to a wild/grass fire i pack up cuz the winds can shift and you can get overcome by the smoke long before the flames reach you. like Vic said your first priority is your personal safety. so again wear your pack.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS wear your Air Pack. You never know what your getting into. You want to go home after the call, thats the goal. Yes putting the fire out and poss. saving a life is also the goal but every FF knows the number one person on that scene is YOU. Your saftey always comes above anything else. What if you went down then what. Now your part of the problem and not the solution. Were there to correct the problem not add to it. So please ALWAYS wear your pack. I don't want to read about your LODD ON CLOSECALLS.COM. BE SAFE MY BROTHER AND GOD BLESS...

not to be critical,...ALWAYS wear your pack, better to have it on even for a few min then to not have it at all, we had a car fire Dec 23. '06 the engine was smoking some but not much fire so me and one of the other guys got our gear and packs on and were advancing toward the car, we were bout 10 ft. away when it blew, so WEAR YOUR PACK its a life saver wether it be a car, house, or even dumpster fire. wear it. keep this in mind when you pull up at a scene RULE ONE: PACK UP, RULE TWO: listen to whoever is in command, RULE THREE: then attack the fire. thats my 3 simple Fireground rules. hope it helps.
