It hasn't been a good day for some of our patients and survivors...

One of my fellow board members on the Board of Directors for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has a young son named Ben.

Ben's been fighting the good fight for over a year, and seemed to be doing better. but we found out today that his osteosarcoma (essentially bone cancer) has metastasized--meaning it's spreading. Osteosarcoma has one of the lowest survival rates for pediatric cancer. The news is worse than disheartening. If you could meet this kid you'd know why. They're researching alternate treatment options right now.

On the heels of that news we also found out that one of our Team in Training coaches, Joanne, just found out that her husband of 22 years, Ed, has been diagnosed with lymphoma. It's irony in it's most tragic sense. Joanne and Ed are an amazing couple, and they give so much of their time and resources to LLS. Ed is a hiking coach for a new fundraising program called Hike for Discovery. His team is heading to the Grand Canyon to complete their hike, and Ed insisted on traveling with his team, despite his diagnosis.

It makes me realize that life is so fleeting, and sometimes bad things happen to amazing people. I continue to keep the faith, harbor hope, and pray, but today wasn't the best day for the good guys.

As a firefighter whose department is involved in a lot of fundraising activities for cancer research, I know how hard it is to have people close to you diagnosed with this wretched disease. We take it one day at a time and try to do everything we can to help out. As a cancer patient myself, I would like to thank everyone who has ever been involved in cancer research (especially the LLS, as I have Hodgkins Lymphoma). Without people like you I would have had a much harder time dealing with both the physical and mental aspects of my ongoing treatment.

THANK YOU!!!

Thanks guys....I'm doing better today, and it just made me feel that much more determined to do what I can to help find a cure.

Hey Mel,
Sorry to hear about what happened, but keep truckin' along... and know that whatever happens, happens for a reason. Every dollar you raise in honor of these individuals may not save their lives, but may save the lives of others in the future. Your efforts are never in vain!! Love you!!!
