Fire crews are battling a blaze that is tearing through the Bruce Trail, the public footpath that spans the protected Niagara Escarpment.

The fire broke out in a fire pit and spread to a barn north of Bolton, Ont., near Gore and King Roads on Monday afternoon.

The blaze spread quickly and gained strength as it passed underneath trees. Officials estimate the fire is now at least a kilometre in length and is threatening local homes.

Caledon firefighters on all-terrain vehicles are cutting through dense terrain to try and reach the blaze.

This year marks the 40 anniversary of the Bruce Trail, which boasts scenic vistas and valleys.

The trail runs along the Niagara Escarpment, which has been designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and is one of the few biospheres in the world to be protected by legislation
