Well....I"m now a volunteer for Lafourche Crossing 308. I've been thinking about joining but I know how tuff they can make it if you are a girl. If I can I usually go to the trainings with my boyfriend (he is with 308). This training they let me go for a ride around town in the firetruck! LOL! After we got back and they were doing truck checks I was talking with the Asst. Chief. I wa explaing to him what I do at 911. I am a fire dispatcher. Well after talking for a while he asked me if I would like to join the fire company. Well of course I said YES! He wants me to handle all of their radio traffic on my days off from 911. And he also said that they could start teaching me about the trucks. I'm sure I won't be running into a fire but getting to help out any way I can is exciting!

As a dispatcher also I know you can bring a lot to both sides of the fence. When I am dispatching I can visualize whats going on and sometimes be a step a head in the exta things that might be needed. And from being on the fire side I have helped explain why we dispatched certain ways. Seems to help alot. And dont let your being a female stop you I have fought along side of a few and rather have them beside me than some of there male counter parts. Train hard, smart and keep your head about you and I bet you will be great. Stay safe and welcome to the ranks.

Well done Christine, but don't sell yourself short!

I've been thinking about joining but I know how tuff they can make it if you are a girl.
It can be tuff for both male and female. There's no doubt that the fire service is male dominated, but it needn't be that way. Take what they give you, but don't accept "you're a girl" attitude that many may try and give you. Some of the ebst I've worked with have been female.

He wants me to handle all of their radio traffic on my days off from 911.
If you want to do more than just the communicaitons side of things, then say so. Step up to the plate that has just been served and make of it what you want, not what thjey want or they think you can do.

I'm sure I won't be running into a fire but getting to help out any way I can is exciting!
Again, don't sell yourself short. You're just as capable as the next person to run into the fire (Obviously with the right training).

Hey Christine, Just wonted to say Welcome to the Volunteer World !! Specking from being a Asst. Fire Chief you will do just fine in the firefighting world.. Just keep the training up & that chin up, NO matter what the guys may say. If it's in your heart to do this you will be just fine. You got a real good start on it with being a dispatcher.
