We need to step back and look at how we determine who becomes a Fire Chief! Somehow the practice of his dad was or he has been here the longest or he just plain sucked the right persons ass has got to go!! We are killing our firefighters left & right! There has got to be a way to insure the most qualified are put in this position. Not who scores the highest on a stupid test or who is freinds with who!! There are good people standing in the shadows with the proper knowhow the guts and the brains to stand up to politicians and alike to ensure our firefighters come home safe. We are going backwards in the fireservice that is progressing forward in technology and equipment. So lets band together & find a way to put a stop to this stupidity and get some Chiefs in the spot that have some common sense!

Be safe & use your heads, don't do it because someone said to!!

While I can see your point, I think we as a service need to look at things from a different standpoint. New and improved technology does not always mean better. We use better technology now, but lost our basic senses because of that technology. AND too many suits, who think they have a clue, are petitioning and regulating what we can and can't do. Firefighter safety should be utmost, but build a building and try to get better fire protection...OH NO, thats too expensive. Cut the "safety factors" built in down, because computers can better design the system, to the exact engineered requirements. Build crap out of plastic, and metals, because we as consumers want to pay less, but the unions and workers want more money. We have a job to do. Younger, "more educated" guys do not necessarily have what it takes to be a chief because they generally don't see as many fires. Older guys don't necessarily want to change because they are comfortable. Put the best guy in the position....gee by who's viewpoint. The guy that finished number 2, who thinks the guy who got picked sucked ass to get there. There is no easy answer. We as an industry need to slow down, go backwards a little, and rethink things. WE as the workers need to let the suits in congresses know what is needed.
