SALEM The North Bend Fire Co. will be closing, its members and equipment consolidated with other departments, the city council here decided during a controversial vote Monday night.
Officials believe that this may be the first step in further consolidations in the future. The vote passed by a slim 4-3 margin, giving North Bend until March 1 to clear out of the hall.
"It is an intense situation. It's disturbing to close a volunteer fire house," said Salem Fire Chief Fred Ayars. "We had to react to influences outside of our control."
