Last night was the last shift for one of my guys Harry G. Harry retired today after 35 years with the Philadelphia Fire Department. He spent his entire career at the same station, E-20/L23 in Chinatown. Over the years things have slowed down, but Harry saw his share of drama during his long career. We had a dinner in his honor and every company in the Battalion came by the station to wish him well.
As employees go Harry is the Gold Standard. He never complained even when
we were working in the worst conditions. He rarely was sick, always came to work early and never made a problem. Easy going by nature he never had a bad word about anyone or anything. A guy with a great sense of humor he was a gem at the kitchen table. And despite what some may think about a guy with that many years on the job he was a tough guy fireman till the last shift. Earlier this year we were at a particularly serious fire and while we were inside attacking the fire I turned around to see Harry right there behind me on the steps pulling line.

Affectionately known as the "King" out of respect for his seniority (The next closest guy has about 23 years at the station) he was never a guy to have a big ego. Harry is a true gentleman and a great person. He will be sorely missed on the platoon but we are all better for having worked with him and had the pleasure of his friendship. We look forward to keeping in touch with him as he starts his retirement. He is truly a "Dragon For Life". Good luck Harry and remember to "Put em' in the wall!"

Harry, I wish I would have met you at least once. Good luck in your retirement. To those that follow Harry - remember all those great traits and continue the tradition of excellence,

I wish Harry well.
That tradition that he carried in his heart, that history that he was a part of and love for the job that is etched in his face will always be there.
The chase is over.
Time to party.
