Alex, up here in the Chicago area getting hired on a private ambulance is not very difficult I would say that the majority of the companies would grant you an interview as soon as you fill out the application as long as you had your lic. in hand. Even a few of the bigger outfits would have you start the next day. Then again these same companies have a very large turnover rate as the mojority of them don't handle 911 calls as they pretty much just handle patient transfers especially the basic life support rigs. Then again a few actually follow a hiring process that includes a full background check, and testing and training programs. In my experiences with the private ambulance industry here I definitely let anyone that is applying to the private ambulances here to take a good look at the ones that follow a hiring process as it appears that they tend to retain employees and treat them in a much better fashion then those that don't use these types of processes.
Anyhow I wish you the best of luck in your classes, and after you pass an outstanding career in one of the best jobs in the world

The ambulance services that I work/worked for hired just drivers also. But with both of them it was very easy to get hired on. Especially with a private service they tend to always need people. What I liked about my first company is that sometimes they ran just a basic truck, which it was in a very rural and poor county, and that gave me alot of confidence in my skills as a basic and then later on as ALS. Most basics that only drive and don't do patient care tend to doubt themselves as to what they can do. I would recommend everyone that all basics have to run in a poor and rural county where there is noone else buy them and a partner.
