Went on my first rig fire today! It was way cool. I'm so glad I became a firefighter. The workover rig was a comlpete loss but we did get the gas well out. Was a brand new rig worth $1.5 million now its just a pile of scrap metal. Good training material for NOT WELDING AROUND OPEN GAS WELLS.

It was a workover rig in the process of drilling a new well. We used AFFF foam. No moniters were in place yet but the crew cheif had hand held. It wasn't blasting like in the movies, just kind of floating around like a camp fire. Took a couple of hits to get it out and keep it out, the rig was so hot it kept reigniting the gas. Once we got the rig cooled down no problems.

Very cool post Katherine. Was there any sour gas associated with the incident? Did the company have fixed monitors in place and if so, was foam used to control it or is it like one of those movie oil well fires where they call in Boots & Koots or Red something or another. These are awesome incidents to pull up on, and the noise. That's another amazing and scary thing.
