I would ask all my friends to observe a moment of reverent silence for the ex-Laceyville, PA firechief, his wife, and daughter who lost their lives in a brutal murder in their own home, and also for their family who will feel this more acutely than we do. We as firefighters expect loss. Loss on scene of victims and brothers to this beast we all fight that we know as death. Loss to old age of friends and family who have lived full, healthy lives. Loss to tragedy as a result of the heinous acts of those small-minded individuals who solve their problems with physical violence and permit their emotions to govern their actions and cloud their judgement. We as emergency management professionals deal with death every single day of our lives. We fight him tooth-and-nail, and we know his face. We feel his breath on the backs of our necks and we hear his voice in the moaning of the flame. We know he is coming for us someday, and yet we fight on. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose, but still we fight.
It is part of the job to take risks with your own life, and watch those working beside you take risks with theirs in order to do a job. It is worth it to any emergency management professional to surrender his own life to save that of another. We understand and accept it. What you don't expect is to lose a brother firefighter to such a senseless, malicious, heinous and bloodthirsty act as what transpired for this man who gave his life to save those of other people.
Our thoughts are with you, and as for me, if there is ANYTHING I can do to aid this family, I offer that help willingly and without reserve.
