Just a very short post to promote an under-used and vitally important asset that is available to all of you- the National Fire Academy. I'm here for year four of my Executive Fire Officer journey and getting to network with people from all over the world- there's even a mate from Australia in my class. I get to learn from world-class instructors and I get to sleep in a government-regulation bed (maybe that's not so great) and I get to hang at at the legendary "Command Post Pub" and pick up tidbits from brother and sister fire and emergency service personnel from all around. I even get to meet with colleagues from the private and public sector who are working and learning at the Emergency Management Institute, and get to share in their perspectives as well.

I get to meet people and I get an education and I don't really have to pay a thing. Where else can you get that kind of a deal?

Those of you who haven't been, need to go. Those of you who haven't been back in a while, there's new stuff here. Those of you who go frequently, you need to talk it up.

If I get a chance to get away from the homework assignments, maybe I'll post another update in a day or two. Regardless, any of you who want a good education that is pertinent and timely and involves working with great people, consider the NFA. You'll never regret it.

If you hadn't noticed, I have added some links throughout this post. Use them and more importantly, use this one: for future students.

Mick,
We really do need to promote the NFA. We need to USE the resources we have. The handoff courses are great too the old MCTO classes and now NIMS. The officer training is on the mark. There is the terrorism & the bomb classes & the Hazmats & administration and on & on & on. Lets see if this link can work to introduce folks to the NFA if they haven't heard of it. AND if you can't GO TO MD to the campus, there are several online sessions that are good training too. (you may have to cut & paste)

I've been to the NFA a few times and I keep trying to go back. I'm a volunteer fire fighter. I have a full time job and a family so sometimes it is difficult to get training time in. I've been a fire fighter since 1986 and sometimes the "same old thing" is not challenging. Attending the National Fire Academy VIP courses is a very good experience. It FREE & they schedule the classes about a year ahead. I take vacation time from work to be able to go. It is intense!! It is interesting & you meet other fire fighters from all over the place which helps you to understand how you & your department are ahead or behind and/or where improvements can be made. You also share what works with others. For me, there are no phones ringing, nobody wanting this or that, no catastrophies to handle from Saturday to Friday. It is a VACATION for me but in that time I am a FIREFIGHTER and that is all I have to be. In the academic world they call it "immersion". It is a fantastic learning tool when all you really have to think about is learning & being a fire fighter. I STRONGLY recommend that anyone who can make the effort attend the NFA. I have taken the VIP courses Challenges for Local Training Officers, Hazardous Materials Incident Management and was in the pilot class for the Advanced Safety Operations & Management. I can't wait to go back.
