Every monday night we have fire practice. Consists of a variety of things. It is two hours, sometime three hours in length. And Once every month, there is a Valley Wide Medical First Responder Night where we do nothing but practice medical. These are usually two hours in length as well.
About Me:
I joined the fire service when I was 17 years old. I was a junior fire fighter for 6 months. Then i turned 18 and became an active fire fighter. I have been two 4 major fires in the last year and a half. One of which was the first time Halifax Fire has gone this far in the History of HRM Emergency Services. I have been first on scene for many car accident, most of then nothing serious. I love it, and i would never leave.
I joined because I grew up around the fire service. I'm 19 years old, and my father has been in for 18. I'm a volunteer right now, but my goal is to be a career firefighter. I was kinda expected to join, had a lot of pressure to, and my father started a junior program at the station in which i was the first Member. Best move I ever made. I have no regrets.
Why I Love Fire/EMS
the adrenaline. By far. I'm an adrenaline junkie.
Top Issues Facing Responders:
Well, for us, being volunteers, the top issue that we face is response time, and budgeting. My dept. has a response time of about 5 minutes from when we recieve the call, to the time when the members make it to the hall and get the truck on the road. However, we do have a truck that needs to be replaced and there isn't enough money in our budget to do so. Those are the two top issues that I can think of.
