About Me:
I am in the Community Risk Management Department at Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, based at Kendal Fire Station.
Cumbria is in the north west of England. It is a very large area, mostly rural with some large towns, lots of villages, and farms.
The fire service in Cumbria is largely retained - there are 5 whole time stations (4 are 24 hours, 1 is 12 hours whole time, 12 hours retained) and 33 retained stations.
Problems facing us in Cumbria are mostly RTCs, farm & wild fires, chimney fires and we also have an ageing population and many people are isolated a living a distance from services. It's obviously not as vast as areas in the US, Australia etc, but within the UK, its pretty remote! We are very fortunate that crime is fairly low and people here are generally friendly!
In community risk, our job is prevention, so we carry out home safety visits, fit smoke alarms and give information & education about home safety, fire safety and road safety. We work with children, youths, challenging youths with behavioural issues, elderly & vulnerable adults. We also work with migrant workers & gypsy/travellers to ensure that everyone is accessing our service fully. We work in partnership with the police, ambulance service, probation service, youth workers, housing department, social services, road safety department...the list is endless.
I love working for the fire service. Although not a serving firefighter, I work closely with them and have a massive appreciation for what they do. I hope that my job makes a difference to the community in which I live and serve.

Welcome to the Nation and I hope you get as much out of the interaction here as I have had. It's a great resource. While you are online, I'd also suggest checking out my blog, Firehouse Zen, over on the FireEMSBlogs network.

FHZ is a little different than the rest, as our discussion is supposed to remain civil and cerebral. As we say, "It's brain food for Mongo". So come on by and check it out and if you are on Facebook, you can "like" our page over there as well. Stay safe-

justine, welcome aboard ,,,, the sites fun and many of the discussions are interesting ,,,, it's nice seeing how other departments and countries perform the same operations ,,,, but i love looking at all the different style apparatus used all over the world ,,,, word to the wise if you trade patches be careful, there are a few people looking to just get and not reciprocate ,,,, now, i will not mail anything till i have something in hand, but you do what you want ,,,, my goal is not to get a patch i do not collect them but rather warn you and watch your back as we all do for each other, it's what the brotherhood is all about ,,,, if you wanna add me as a friend, great, if not that too is OK, my message is intended to simply welcome you to the site ,,,,
be safe and god bless ,,,
