My dad was a firefighter, so I grew up in the fire house. When I was 17 I told my dad I wanted to join the fire dept. and got the "No son of mine is going to run into a burning building when everyone else is running out" speach. Since I had to be 18 to join with out my parents signing off on it the was nothing I could do but sit in the station when my dad went on calls. 4 years later a friend took me to her squad because she had to pick something up, well she introduced me to the crew that was there and after hanging out there for hours I walked out with my application and three months later I was running on the ambulance. I only joined the squad for vehicle extrication but got talked into going to EMT school a year after joining. 10 years later I was working as a full time EMT in the town I grew up in. A year ago my work partner (who was a fire fighter in another town) decided she wanted to join the fire dept. in the town we worked in. So while working one night we stoped in so she could pick up her application. The Capt. handed one to me and I told him I didnt need one but my partner made me fill it out anyway. Two months later I was a member and the Capt. told me I was already signed up for fire school. So after being in EMS for 12 1/2 years I am also a Fire Fighter despite the speach my dad gave me.
