About Me:
Dr. Cooney is a an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and the Director of the EMS & Disaster Medicine Fellowship Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University. He provides lectures and training for medical students, residents and fellows in Emergency Medicine and EMS. In addition to his Emergency Medicine practice, Dr. Cooney is also a Hyperbaric Medicine Consultant and provides EMS medical direction to Fire and EMS agencies covering over 1200 square miles with about 60,000 EMS calls/year. He has worked to create an EMS physician response team to provide on-call field response for special circumstances and in case of disaster. Dr. Cooney has recently authored 4 book chapters in Emergency Medicine and EMS textbooks and has presented research at a number of regional, national and international meetings. Derek serves on state and national level committees and participates in paramedic education at multiple levels.
