A 19 room motel in Ascutney VT was a total loss, after an 8yo boy found a lighter out back of the hotel and started some leaves on fire. This quickly became a brush fire, which in turn engulfed the middle section of the hotel. Several factors contributed to the total loss of the building: there are no hydrants, and it was difficult to establish a proper water supply. Tankers and engines shuttled water from ponds and rivers out on some of the back roads. Secondly, due to many renovations over the last 20-25 years, all of the firewalls originally built with the structure had been compromised, allowing the fire to spread rapidly. Crews were on scene for over 8 hours. Last count, 17 fire departments were on scene.
