It looks like an edge protector to me too, in the Netherlands we call it "zadelhout" which (directly) translated would end up being "saddle wood". The item in your picture however is slightly curved, whilst the ones we use here have sharp (90 degree) edges, as you can see on the attached pictures. I'm sorry, I do not have any normative document, or other information for you.
