U.S. Army Chemical Corps Chemical Reconnaissance Detachment (Special Operations) practice night maneuvers and raiding an emeny chemical weapons facility with the South Korean military forces in South Korea.
CRD is a very little known special operations team that is trained to operate in areas 'non-permissive' or denied from normal military access. The team is capable of direct action, special reconnaissance, counterterrorism, and information operations to deter and prevent the acquisition or use of WMD if and when necessary.
CRD studies the CBRN warfare capabilities of rouge nations (Iran, North Korea, Syria), nations that may be future opponents (Russia, China), and terrorist groups. CRD also trains military forces of allied nations in CBRN defensive warfare and training other U.S. military special operations teams on how to fight in CBRN environments.
The unit also has a domestic mission where it is tasked to provide expertise, assistance, and manpower to work with civilian responders and the National Guard in the event of a WMD terrorist attack on U.S. soil. The CRD would provide chemical reconnaisance, detection, and decontamination support during and after an attack.
