Haz-Mat 1
The City of Pittsburgh Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Response Team was established in 1986 as a joint effort between the Bureau of EMS and the Bureau of Fire. Presently the team is made up of 31 Paramedics, 45 Firefighters and 10 Police Officers.

Our hazardous materials response team, also known as the “Gold Team”, is one of the five teams that comprise the Allegheny County Hazardous Material Response Team. Our “Gold Team” is one of five hazmat teams located throughout Allegheny County.

Annually, Rescues 1 and 2 respond to hundreds of potential hazardous material investigation calls throughout the city. The full Haz-Mat team is called upon to respond to several dozen confirmed hazardous material releases annually. Calls might include anything from a residential carbon monoxide leak to large fuel spills, chemical spills, train derailments, laboratory incidents, radiation incidents and biological hazards.

In addition to Rescues 1 and 2, the primary EMS response vehicle to a Haz-Mat detail is Haz-Mat 1, (formerly 2602) which is a 2006 Pierce custom Haz-Mat truck equipped with an 18 foot walk through body. Haz-Mat 1 is housed with Rescue 1 and Medic 9 in North Oakland on Millvale Avenue. Haz-Mat 1 carries a variety of equipment including chemical suits, gloves, boots, decontamination equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus, full face respirators, spill and leak control hardware, hand tools, detection meters, a reference library including a laptop computer with printer, fax machine and various other communications equipment. We are constantly in the process of adding the additional equipment necessary to mitigate incidents involving weapons of mass destruction and other terror incidents.

Additionally hazmat units operated by the Bureau of Fire include a foam engine, a spill cleanup truck and decontamination vehicles.
