Toronto Fire Service's Hazardous Materials Unit - Clandestine Drug Lab

November 18, 2009: According to local news sources, police responded to a duplex on Woburn Avenue, near Lawrence Avenue West and Avenue Road, at about 1:00 a.m., after neighbours detected a strong smell.

Upon their arrival at the residence, police discovered a large discovered a cache of chemicals and called for HAZMAT.

HAZMAT determined that the many of the chemicals in residence were highly explosive.

Several homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

Officials say the lab contained two 100 gallon tanks full of anhydrous ammonia.

Anhydrous ammonia is an important chemical in the manufacture of methamphetamine which is also commonly referred to as crystal meth.
