In April 2007, the Chlorine Institute (CI) had their Chlorine Emergency Plan (CHLOREP) Team Member Training at the Mississippi Fire Academy. At least, 120 participants (including instructors) from all over Canada and the United States.

Topics such as the Incident Command System (ICS) structure, site assessments, site safety plans and Chlorine Institute guidelines were discussed. Chemical and physical properties of chlorine, medical surveillance guidelines, respiratory and personal protective equipment and air monitoring and decontamination were also discussed.

The Chlorine Institue provides training to HAZMAT teams nationally in how to respond to accidental and intentional releases involving chlorine from both transport vessels of all types (road, rail, sea and air) and fixed facilities.

The institute maintains it's only HMRT which is trained to exclusively respond to major chlorine incidents anywhere in the U.S.

In January 2006, the institute sent it's team to Graniteville, South Carolina to respond to a massive chlorine release that resulted when two freight trains collided into each other. That incident is remember as one of the worst train and industrial accidents in U.S. history.
