Goal: To respond to and reduce the consequences of hazardous materials incidents to the community and the environment.

The Torrance Fire Department maintains a Hazardous Materials Response Team consisting of nine State Certified Hazardous Materials Technician/Specialist on each shift. Each Haz Mat Team member has a minimum of 240 hours of specialized training. Our Haz Mat Team personnel cross staff two units which respond to all other types of emergency incidents. When responding as our Haz Mat Team, one of these engine companies respond with our Hazardous Materials Response Unit.

All of our other on-duty emergency response personnel are First Responder Operational and Decontamination Team trained, readily able to interface with our Haz Mat Team.
