In 1949, the rural area south of the City of Renton, WA became King County Fire District 40. The new district was all volunteer, and covered everything between Renton and Kent, and across the Green River Valley to Tukwila. Over time, the three cities gnawed away at
District 40's response area, which eventually dwindled to 12 square miles; served by two career stations. In January of 2008, the City of Renton dealt the final death blow--annexing two thirds of District 40's area. District commissioners decided to fold what was left into the Renton Fire Department. The one-time District headquarters, Station 41 (Fairwood), is now Renton Station 17; This 2006 Spartan/H & W is the very last District 40 rig.
