Special Services 57 is the name of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company's HAZMAT team at it's Princeton, New Jersey manufacturing facility and sprawling campus.
Bristol-Myers Squibb Company is a private corporation and a manufacturer of pharmaceuticals and other healthcare related products with manufacturing plants around the world.
The Princeton facility of the corporation is known for having one of the best trained and equipped hazardous materials response teams in the world.
The team has reportedly been in service for over 50 years.
Besides protecting it's sprawling Princeton facility and campus (virtual a small city), it also provides mutual aid to North Brunswick Township, Middlesex County.
Support Services 57. That's a pretty cool sounding name for a HAZMAT team. Very sexy. ;) I wonder if they call it SS-57 for short?
Speaking of cool and sexy, the response truck for this team looks like a very sweet ride.
Here is more information about their response vehicle:
This unique vehicle provides a multitude of capabilities to the response team from a single apparatus. When it comes to a quality response, this team cut no corners. The body is mounted on a Freightliner FL70 with a Cummins ISC330 engine and Allison MD3060 transmission. Due to deployment of left and right side awnings with curtain enclosure for prolonged on scene mitigation and research operations, a vertical exhaust was specified to route the exhaust fumes up and away from the work zones.
The forward section of the body incorporates a 71" long x 88.5" wide command center with 74" headroom. This room also provides transportation seating for three additional technicians on a rear wall mounted bench seat with SCBA cradles. Along the forward wall is a full width stainless steel desk/work counter with four (4) slide-out drawers. Above the desk are three individual aluminum storage cabinets for equipment and resource materials.
Located on the left front of the body is a 34 foot pneumatic telescoping mast. Fixed on top of the mast is a Pelco pan and tilt platform that encloses a digital color camera with 6X10 telescoping lens that can be remotely controlled from the command center. The camera is connected to a 14" color monitor within the command center. Individual images can be captured on digital recorders and printed from an on-board color printer for documentation purposes. Weather conditions are monitors from a telescoping weather van and detector on the right rear of the body.
On-site breathing air is supplied through a Cascade system with 6000 psi booster pump. The two-bottle fill enclosure provides safe filling operations from the right rear compartment with nine spare SCBA bottle storage tubes located conveniently just adjacent to the fill enclosure.
Plenty of on-scene operational power is provided by a 25,000 watt PTO generator that supplies power to a 9000 watt multi-directional light tower, two MagnaFire tri-pod flood lights, two Hannay cord reels with power distribution boxes, interior command center lighting, heat and air conditioning, refrigerator and multiple power outlets. These same circuits can be operated through a 50-amp shorepower input through a transfer switch.
Located on the roof and accessible by body mounted ladder is an observation platform with fold-up perimeter rails. Both the platform and the ladder meet OSHA safety standards. Within the body are storage accommodations for ladders, rescue tri-pods and three pike poles. Multiple arrangements of shelves and trays provided dedicated storage of equipment in the high capacity body compartments.
