Water Rescue-Suicide Attempt

Melbourne Police received calls from citizens describing an adult male who appeared to be climbing over the railing of the Eau Gallie Causeway. The subject was believed to have jumped from the peak. Officers responded to the area, including members of the PD’s marine unit. The subject was located swimming toward the bridge. Members of the marine unit made contact and retrieved him from the water. He was alert and capable of assisting himself onto the boat; however, he did complain of pain. The male was transported to a nearby boat launch where he received initial medical attention from members of Melbourne Fire Rescue and Brevard County Fire Rescue. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Further investigation revealed the male jumped in an attempt to commit suicide. He will continue to receive medical treatment until he adequately recovers and then will be turned over to a mental health treatment facility for further evaluation under a Baker Act.
