Philadelphia Firefighters Injured Battling High-Rise Fire

PHILADELPHIA - One firefighter is hospitalized in critical condition following a fire at a Philadelphia high-rise apartment building.

Executive Chief Daniel Williams says the injured firefighter was transferred to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday morning. Williams says at least three residents were also transported from the scene of the fire at the Philadelphia Housing Authority building but their injuries don't appear serious.

Firefighters responded to the blaze around 6 a.m. and evacuated dozens of residents. Smoke and fire could be seen pouring from windows on the building's eighth floor before firefighters doused the flames.

Williams says eight other firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and exhaustion.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
