The Main-Transit Fire Department of Amherst, NY was alerted to an injury accident at the Main-Transit Fire Station 1, 6777 Main Street, Amherst. The crash was reported on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 12:38 am. A car had struck 3 of the 6 Fire Station bays and extrication was required. Main-Transit Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate a 51 yr old male from Buffalo. The male was taken to Erie County Medical Center by Twin City Ambulance with multiple injuries. 3 of the 6 fire trucks were damaged as well as support columns, brick pillars, roof structure and the front glass bay doors.
Fire Chief Jon Kemp commanded 40 Main-Transit Firefighters and there were no reported injuries. Fire Chief Kemp is assessing the damage estimate but it is expected to be several hundred thousand dollars. The Main-Transit Fire Department is still in service and has already responded to 2 additional calls while the fire station was being shored up. The Amherst Police Department Accident Investigation unit is investigating the cause of the early morning crash.
