Greensboro Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team
Greensboro, North Carolina
From Hackney:
The Greensboro Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team placed their new Hackney TC1282 Tractor/Trailer Haz-Mat into service during the summer of '99. This trailer packs a whopping 800 cu.ft. of storage volume, excluding the rear command center.
The rear command features an "L" shaped, wrap-around desk with a filing cabinet and upper library and equipment cabinet. A 19" color monitor is attached to the desk, and is connected to a 400 mhz computer featuring CAMEO and ALOHA. A printer, copier and fax are next to the work station, as well as a bank of digital cellular phones.
On the roof, a WeatherPak 400 detector sits atop a telescoping tower. The roof is accessible via an OSHA compliant ladder at the rear of the trailer. The roof top is used as an observation platform and features a quick erect observation safety platform rail system to comply with OSHA standards.
The tractor is a 4-door, raised roof cab Freightliner with 330 hp Cummins and vertical exhaust. It features a 35KW, single-phase PTO generator inter-connected to the trailer to power a 6000-watt light tower, (4) portable flood lights, multiple cord reels, command center air conditioner and strip heaters and all command center electrical outlets.
Slide-out racks are included for mounting 12 complete SCBA's on a back-up and go configuration. Between the SCBA racks are spare bottle storage tubes for another 12 bottles. A full-size refrigerator/freezer sits in a deep compartment for rehab and storage of temperature sensitive testing equipment. The balance of the space features multiple slide-out and slide/tilt trays and shelves, plus two 78" high x 36" deep two-sided tool boards for shovels, brooms, axes, pry bars and hand tools. Both sides of the trailer feature full length roll-out awnings and full enclosures curtains. All this rescue capability came in way under budget!
