Here, in all its red splendor, is the very first Command Vehicle owned by the Friday Harbor Fire Dept. Up until 1993, the Department Chief had to use their own vehicle to respond to calls. This was a problem in '93, as the then new Chief, Cynthia DeStaffany, did not own a car. Initially, she was allowed use of building inspector (and future Ocean Shores Fire Chief) Jim Hodges' town vehicle. But this quickly became an issue for Hodges. In response, the town slapped a coat of red paint on their 1978 Chevy pickup, along with a siren, and a really cheap light bar. The truck got it's name from the deceased former town employee who used to drive it. It was a wreck; parts were missing from the driver's door, and the cab generally leaked like a sieve. In 1997, when FHFD was able to procure a used Ford Explorer, Old Bill was surplused. As of 2008, it is still on the road; recognizable from the painted over maltese cross on the door.
