Why I Joined Fire/EMS

A friend invited me to a volunteer FD meeting and I thought that it would be cool. As I trained and got to help more people-I realized that it was something that I wanted to do as a career.

Top Issues Facing Responders:

TRAINING, TRAINING, TRAINING!!! There is currently no continuing education requirements (at least in KS) for fire fighters. We are however required to have CE hours for EMS and technical jobs, but not for actual fire fighting. The total number of fires around the country is decreasing, but LOD deaths are staying the same. The tricky part of that statement is that FF heart attacks are also decreasing-we are becoming very complacent about safety on the fire ground!
