Why I Joined Fire/EMS
Got interested as a teenager, loved learning new things, and working with my hands. As I learned and understood how important serving others was, I really got excited. This is now the reason I still am involved and it has become a big part of my life.
Why I Love Fire/EMS
Events are constantly changing, usually never the exact same twice. Training and learning new things from instructors and students alike. Enjoy teaching students, especially new brothers and sisters to the fire service.
Top Issues Facing Responders:
1. 400 years of heritage impeded by progress.
2. This is my sandbox, and you cann't play in it ?
3. New firefighters being told that "you know that department up the road... they don't have crap, know crap, or cann't do crap.. why would we want to train with them ?
4. TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN !!!

HELLO LIKE TO TALK TO YOU SOMTIME. MAYBE HAVE YOU DOWN TO GLASGOW FOR SOME TRAINING.

    Jim,

We have numerous high-rise and mid-rise structures on Hilton Head Island - beachfront hotels and condos predominate. We also have several 100 to 300 foot-tall water towers, communications towers, and electrical towers, and an 80-foot tall lighthouse with high-angle rescue potential.

I've done lots of mountain/remote rescue, starting with being first-due to South Mountain and Black Rock when I volunteered in Maryland, and structural high-angle work with the CRS rescue company in Hagerstown.

I did years of climbing and rope rescue during my 16 years in the Chattanooga area. Lookout Mountain and Signal Mountain are minutes from the downtown area, and White Oak Mountain was literally in my vollie station's back yard.

I did 11 years with Greenville County, including 4 on heavy rescues that did quite a bit of remote high-angle, tons of low-angle and confined space, and an occasional structural high-angle rescue. I was the Technical Rescue Coordinator the last 2 years I was there.

I teach rope rescue all over the state for the SC fire academy, as well as teaching rope and confined space rescue for my department.

I still teach swiftwater rescue at least 4 times per year in Tennessee. Those classes have lots of water applications for technical ropes, several low-angle applications, and we're developing a Level III swiftwater course that will be targeted at Class V canyons. That class will include a substantial segment of highline work.

We use some lowlines in the marine swiftwater environment along the SC coast, too.

I've been doing rope rescue, confind space rescue, and swiftwater rescue for about 30 years, and teaching those same subjects for 22 years or so.

I moved to HHI for warm weather, being with my family every Christmas Day, promotional opportunities, and not running 4,000 calls per year. So far it's worked out.

    Jim,

I see you have a history with Lake Junaluska. Interestingly, I'm originally from Asheville. My church held summer retreats at Lake Junaluska all the time when I was small.

I grew up skiing at Cataloochee, and I used to river guide for Appalachian Rivers on the Nantahala, so western NC is very familiar to me.
  • Michelle Munisteri

Hey Jim. Thanks for the message. I am stationed at Station 1 and we are a USAR station but, I am not assigned to a USAR apparatus. I hope to be some day. Stay safe and keep in touch!
  • Mike Schlags (Captain Busy) Retd

Hey Jim, Guess what we got hit with?

this is going to be a continuing story, several multi-million dollar homes are being threatened, it's all about the weather which produces what we call sundowners around 16:00 hours, blowing down canyons at gusts exceeding 75 mph... hard to control things when the weather is that nasty... specially at night...

Jim, you have some of the most awesome training scenario pix! Are they drills you've set up and trained people in or have you been a course participant?
  • lutan1

I've heard of the Farmedic program! We have nothing liek it here in Oz- I'd love to set up a similar program....

I'm planning atrip to the USA either late this year or sometime next year- would love to keep in touch and get invovled in a class or two.

I'd really like to do some lecturing while over there, perhaps giving an Aussie perspective n issues, response, etc

Thanks for all the positive feedback on my blog about training Jim, I do appreciate it very much. I was looking for feedback from people like you, and I am glad you appreciated what I was trying to say. Thanks as well for inviting everyone to come and take a look, but its difficult to get anyone to do anything, especially if its a small town volunteer like me. Seems like no one respects us volunteers anymore and its a shame, cause there are a l lot out there just like me.
Thanks Jim and stay safe. I look forward to talking with you more.

  • Ginny Martin Edwards

Thanks for the comment - and for adding me.. Yeah, it has been rough at times, and there have been times I wanted to quit - but - I've managed to stick it out - and it has paid off .. I've never considered firefighting for a full time job- .. Right now, I'm just enjoying the volunteer fire dept - loving the fire & life safety education aspect of it- and thinkin about maybe goin back to school for an education degree.. I would love to in the next few years to get my inspectors certification - and become an instructor.. just have to see .. have a great week - stay safe - and keep in touch

    Jim,

I have been involved with the local Sheriff's Dept Special Operations Team for the last 7 years. Current assignment is Team Medic. Additional because I am a reserve dep I am able to function in roles then just providing medical team support.

As of lately the local team is currently in the baby steps of joining the regional team, so we are all just waiting to see what happens.

    Talk with you soon.

  • Nancy Lankford McCain

You know Jim, I have to edit my page so that I remember to see my comments....

I have been co-teaching for 2 1/2 years, and they finally offered another Inst class last fall here in DFW. Are you teaching CERT now?

We have incorporated some urban search training, but there is core group who has done 4 months of urban missing persons training.

Our CERT is PD sponsored, so there are some things they don't get, specially as far as safety goes. I finally got through when the PD thought they would teach cribbing by using a wrecked car. After my temper tantrum and ticking off the world, they finally understood the definition of "light" reccue. This particular group was too old, no pre-training briefing, just all around bad procedure by the PD lead.

If you need help finding CERT instructors, let me know...

    Nancy
