Most of the time when asked about the explorer program in our dept. the general membership will tell them to contact the explorer leader. When I am asked I first respond with do you have any children and if so are they 14 or older, or if it is a young adult I ask if they are 14 or older and if they would like to join. For those that would like to join I first bring them to a few of our meetings to see if being an explorer is some thing that they would like to do. Hopefully after being at a few of the meetings and seeing what goes on the person will join the explorer program.

On a side note I have to say that I am really glad that our dept. has an explorer group not only because I was one but because I enjoy helping them along and seeing the change that happens to them over the years that they are explorers. Also most of the time our explorers end up joining the fire dept. when they turn 18 or graduate from high school.
