We have 2 fairly new pumps with aluminum pump housings. The impellers look they're cast iron or steel. The volute looks like it might be aluminum inside the housing. Our 2 older ones(Gorman Rupp and Hale)are cast volutes with bronze impellers. They are also exhaust prime while the 2 new ones are self priming.Which does anybody prefer?

I thought I preferred the new ones till one froze up.Thought maybe someone had forgot to shut off the gas and it leaked through the carb into the cylinder.Pulled the plug and no fluid and everything was nice and shiny.Cylinder wasn't froze. So I pulled the end of the pump housing.Impeller was froze to the volute.Really had to work to get it free but it seems alright now.Bottom line is no one drained the volute after the last use and it froze up.New maintainence guideline is going to be after every use, drain the housing and give the impeller a squirt of lube to keep them free.Glad we didn't find out on a call.
Changed my mind too.I'll take a cast volute and bronze impeller even if it weighs a ton.
