Hello everyone.. i just got on a dept with a dive team.. my assistant chief on my main dept is a diver and has his own gear for diving.. he stated he has an octopus as well as his mask an fins.. what im wondering is, what all do i need to start out with for my own gear?
what are the more reputable companies for dive equipment?
what companies should i stay away from?
as for an octopus, that is what regulates the airflow?
what is a good octopus to start out with?
do they have timers or clocks for dive time?
what else do i need to know?

thanks.

start with Training!! Get out to a local dive shop and take an Open Water class
Can't dive without it and gives you your license to learn! Get some dives under your belt.
You will learn the in's and out's of different equipment in a safe enviroment.
Usually consists of some classroom and pool sessions then 5 open water dives with an instructor.

Then checkout the following links for Public Safety Dive Instruction

cool.. i will do that,, but have to wait till spring now.. open water is a lil too cold for anyone to dive in unless they have a dry suit
Once you get OW certified, dry suit specality should be one of the first ones you get. You should also get night dive and search and recovery specalities as well. All of these will help to become a better dive team member. And don't jsut dive on calls. Get out and DIVE!!!
Greetings Brothers (and Sisters),

I have just joined the forum so pardon me for the delayed response. I wanted to thank Brian for recommending Dive Rescue International and our industry training partner, teamlgs. I also agree with Brian that you need to get your entry level SCUBA training locally and then search out PROFESSIONAL public safety diver training.

If there is anything we can do to benefit fellow public safety divers, please know we are only a phone call or e-mail away. Information about Dive Rescue International training and equipment can be found online at:

Or we can be reached toll-free at: (800) 248-3483.
