Wednesday, 5 September 2007, from The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service

Two fire crews were called to a reported house fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The incident at Loughor was caused by an extinguished cigarette, which had been put out by an occupant’s slipper.

Station Manager David Phillips who attended the incident said:

"This incident highlights the importance of safely extinguishing cigarettes and disposing of them in the correct manner. It was unfortunate that the person involved had extinguished the cigarette with her slipper, by stamping on the cigarette, and then left the slippers in the conservatory. The occupant was totally unaware that the cigarette was still attached to the slipper and was smouldering away. Thankfully the smoke was confined to the conservatory or this could have been a different story."

1 female casualty received oxygen therapy at the scene.
