Not sure if anyone has ever had the chance and if you get the chance to try out the flash over simulator. It's amazing, to watch the fire start to the point of it starting to roll over the top of you. The picture I used for this forum is of the flash over simulator. My wife knew I was heading out for the weekend for training, and when she seen the pictures of the training. I thought she was going to kill me. With comments of you did WHAT! To lock yourself in a container then set it on fire does sound a little out to lunch.

Flash over simulator is made up of a shipping container that actually is two containers welded together. One a little higher than the entry, ours had a bench on both sides so you can sit and watch. Ok we sat till the fire was lit then you get you butt on the floor. Temp. range from the mid 300F to 900 at the roof. Big difference, our instructor was amazing with the fact that he informed us more than once on the does and don'ts. Do not attempt to touch the flames crawling along the roof.

But one major thing came out of this training, was PPE. It was brought to the attention to the Trainers that PPE was still not put on correctly. One has to think is it training or is it be lazy. It's one of the first basic rules or training that we teach a new recruit on how to put on your bunker gear. But still the buddy system is not used or the buddy has no clue on what they are checking.

Our last training, we smoked a house and ran it like a call. I mention to everyone that I will be the safety officer and will be making sure that everyone is wearing there PPE and marking them on it. I was seeing some errors that required attention. Entering a house with out checking your nozzle pattern, entering a house with out setting your man down alarm.
Not strapping your helmet on or even holding your helmet in your hand and walking around the trucks. Some are minor but this is something that we should be able to do with out thinking. Or maybe we have to start over again and going back to the basics and go from there.

I was a little upset with the fact that I did tell them I would be watching for proper use of PPE. Try it out at your next training and see what happens.
I know lead by example, and sometimes that is our biggest problem. Some senior firefighters do not wear there PPE all the way. But take them aside and explain that they must show example to the younger firefighters.

I am a Swede Instructor for the flash over chamber. I think it is the best realistic training someone can have for showing what a flashover can do.
