The past month or so, we have been doing some self rescue training.
We are in a good position where we have a old house that will be destroyed.
So we have set up traps inside the house. Started off with getting to know your SCBA. We send in two firefighters inside to find there SCBA by the sound of there PASS ALARM. We tie the straps up and there masks are blacked out. They must locate the SCBA and put it on. As they leave the area they go through what we call a Lobster trap. This is an area in the hall way where wires have been set up to trap you. Ideal is to put your tank in the corner of the floor and swim through the wires. Most of us big boys figure we are bulls and will attempt to push through and charge the wires. But they are set up that the more you pull the more you get stuck. Other part that is required in this exercise is that you must communicate to each other.
Most times you can not see what your doing, I always tell that you count the steps going up or down. Example, roof ladder if it's dark and you climbed up 6 rungs you want to make sure you only go down 6 cause the 7th might be the big step. Best example is to watch a blind person, watch how they fill there glass of water or walk around a room. We call all walk around our house with the lights off, we know that it's some many steps this way to the tv remote. Well if we can walk though our homes, we should be able to take our SCBA off and put it back on and know what straps are what.
