Do any of you have what we call Red Light Fire Fighters. I mean those that only come when the tones are dropped or just an interesting sounding call. Only to go home after the call and not rehab trucks. These are the same ones that will come to a meeting if you feed them. My chief is now making some hard choices about who is getting the boot. Also do you have "Paper fire fighters" The ones that went and got a Cert but never seem to get hands on experance. But remind you what level they are. My comments to that is without experance you can try carring that CERT in your hands in front of you going into a fire and see if that paper puts the flames out. I am not talking about someone fresh out of school or has not had the chance to get expernce. I speak of those that are not coming to training or picking an chosing calls. Train, learn, be active and pull your weight. We might not get paid but we all face the same devil. I will step down off my soap box now. Be safe and come home alive not in a bag.

Well Thankyou Very Much.. I can tell you Ive seen alot of crap in My years.. Ive seen people come and go.. quit and retire* I can Tell you one think its going to be difficult to keep up on standards when companysand depts are having trouble getting there members to up hold persional standards. I was listening to the scanner accouple weeks ago when The captain of My old company.. told the assistant chief clear as day "screw you" when He was told to respond to the station and not the scene. needless to say the captain is one of then officers that things hes god and everyone laffs at him to his face and behind his back.. I am more quilifiedc for the position but while I had my 12 years for that company I found out in the word of a ex assistant chief its a popularity contest
I tip my hat to you mr.Wilson.
Yea my fire comp. has people like that but it seems to most of us if we have an officer that they dont like they dont come around. This year and last year when we get a call we have a hard time getting people to come. We barely even get a truck out with a full crew. The one call i was on the other day it was me my dad (hes the assistant cheif aka cheif 2) and one person at the station. They couldnt even drive a truck. We think its cause of our one officer now but we dont know any more i started with a new dept. cause its like a hate fest at my one station.
I am sad to say your dept is not the only one with the same problems. It's a " Boys club" at times. Example" I'm not going if so in so is respoding". Everyone forgets what we are here for at times and lets a pissin contest get in the way. With more and more training required it is a strain on volunteers time. Chin up Zach ( my sons name too) Do the right thing even if it is not popular. Sounds like you a have a commited Dad like I am to my son. He will help so you the right way. Go save some lives and property.
We have that same problem like many depts do, I feel that if you join a dept then you need to respond assist on scene and rehab the trucks whether its two p.m. or two a.m. you do not know when that pager or radio is going to sound, and you want to know that when a truck rolls that it is stocked and ready to go. I know in my dept. we have about four people everytime that rehab the trucks me included even if i didn't respond to the call.
