Our township has three different department within its boundries. Two of the three departments are having a urinary trajectroy competetion for controll of the Township Trustee. In the past, each department has found someone to run that favored their department. Now each department has a firefighter that has filed to run for trustee in the next election. What are your thoughts on firefighters or line officers running for trustee position?
Here is my thoughts our department in the past had the fire chief a village trustee and the board of commissioners was made up of the mayor, Town board member and 2 village trustees and a town employee and they are all firemen. So I know where your going with this issue. How is it solved good question. I feel it is a major conflict of interest.
It's definitely a hard call, especially in small towns where hardly anybody wants to run for council positions and it's hard to find department members too.
If somebody wants to do both and they're the only person, I say let them, but everybody involved better be keeping an eye on things so that it doesn't become a power issue and make sure everything is done to the letter of the law so that the public doesn't get upset.
If someone has a problem with it, ask them if they will run for the trustee position. If they won't, then they better not complain!
