hey guys im looking to get my first leather helmet, and ive been looking at a few different ones. but i figured, who knows better about them than the people that wear them? ive been looking at the sam houston and the new yorker for sentimental reasons, i started my military career in fort sam houston, and my family has a history of fire and police service in the big apple. but im open to all suggestions and opinions

All depends on your department requirements. A lot of departments require you to wear a N6A Sam Houston if you want to wear a leather because it is NFPA approved. My personal preference is the N5A New Yorker, which is OSHA approved but not NFPA. The difference in the two helmets is that the N6A Sam Houston has a 1/8" thicker impact cap than the N5A New Yorker. And also either one can come with any eye protection set up you want just stick to what your department requires.

The reason I like the N5A better is it has a smaller over all dome size to it and its what I have worn for the past 9 years of my career.

I agree about the N5A...ALOT lighter then the N6A...Move mobility in the N5A...another reason I chose the N5A is that is what my dad has worn for the past 31 years...
so i decided to go with the sam houston. thanks for all your input guys
