OK, i wanna buy a leather helmet, Ive been looking at the Sam Houston. but Ive talked to people and hear bad things like the cost, weight on your head/neck, they bend after heating up, supposed constant maintenance to them. I wanna know some good things about them, besides tradition and the popular look with people. i want some good reason to buy the leather helmet. if anyone could help with their knowledge it was be GREAT!. thanks John
your goggles are not for firefighting, I take mine off my houston when interior. I'll use them only for overhaul and extrication jobs or anytime eye protection is needed.
if your pickey about paint chips and cracks, dont buy a leather. But, if you want a serious piece of firefighting equipment that fits your dome well and stays put, you owe it to yourself to buy one. My N6A is by far the best piece of equipment I've ever had. It fits like a fitted baseball cap, firm but not uncomfortable, a stable lid that does not wander around on your mellon. Also look at firefrontstore.com for tough as nails cool looking front holders, that wont bend or break, secures your shield with excellent support, and also reduced risk of entanglememt from weaker brass holders that can allow for wire and flexible duct work falling from ceilings to become wrapped around the bent brass holders. Good luck in your decision process, stay safe.
Oh ok from the pics they didn't look like they were that easy to remove. I haven't had any experience with goggles except for talking to a few guys and seeing the pics. Thanks.
they're incredibly easy to pop off. i use them for rescues and the like. there are a couple small studs on the brim that the strap snaps to. the bourkes melt too. the edge of mine have started to bubble a bit, but i've seen guys whose have actually done a full curve down.
just adding my .02 here, and it's pretty much repeating what everyone else was saying, but i think with every dent, ding, bend, burn, and chip it adds just a little more character to your lid. i know mine's been knocked around, dropped, burned, and abused. it's still holding it's shape though. it's not like you're going to go into a worker and come out with your brim doing the wave. not unless something went very wrong.
i love my houston, and i'll never wear anything else. i'm proud to wear it every time i put it on.
I just recently got a Leather New Yorker and I love it. The benefits behind a Sam Houston is that they are NFPA approved, and they provide very good protection. My roomate had one and he said he would never get another helmet.
