Well, when I was in, we used to clean off the gunk with regular old Easy Off oven cleaner. Don't know if this would do for what you're talking about or not. I'd advise trying in an area where it wouldn't screw up what finish you do have on it. Like maybe on the underside of the brim or something? I've used Easy Off on some polycarb face shields that were so fouled up you couldn't see through them and afterwards, they looked like new except for the scratches that were already there. We also used to apply automotive paste wax to the helmets to keep the gunk from sticking quite as well and made them easier to clean.

Then, you have the camp that wants their lids to look like they've been through a nuclear attack.

Only the automotive wax. We still got some water spotting and minor stains sometimes though. In that kind of heat and environment, nothing is going to stay pristine.

thats true, just got this one and wanted to keep it decent till i actually get it hot. but thanks for the tips.
