I read an excellent book a few years ago that I believe simplifies personal development and leadership. I recommend that everyone read it and apply its basic principles.

The Four Agreements, written by Don Miguel Ruiz, explores how we become regimented by our everyday lives and how adopting the Four Agreements can transform our lives and our leadership. Here’s the four agreements that he recommends:

1. Be impeccable with your word. Use your word (your thoughts and feelings) with good intentions. Believe the best in yourself and in others. Always speak the truth, and do not gossip. Know the difference between the two (truth and gossip).

2. Don’t take anything personal. When others express their opinion, it’s just that, their opinion. It’s their perception. Use it to learn from and become better.

3. Don’t make assumptions. We do it all the time, and we tend to use our assumptions when we make decisions (or express our opinions about others). We should ask questions and test our assumptions to find the truth. Take the time to look and listen to find out what is really going on.

4. Always do your best. The thing to remember is that your best will be different everyday and in every situation. Do your best in the time available with the resources that you have. That’s all we can do.

These are four very simple agreements. They are easy to read, but difficult to practice. Don Miguel Ruiz believes it’s our choice.

What will you choose? Do you agree with his four agreements? Can practicing these four agreements improve leadership?
