This is just a quick post, I was reading this post on the main page, it read of pride both good and bad but what I read was aimed more for glory than what actual firefighting is. I guess what I'm getting at is this.
What are was as Firefighters? sure we fight fires and we cut the cars away from a patient. That is the Post- proactive action we take....
I was in a discussion with our departments deputy chief and he told me of this story and it really opened my eyes away from the "Glory" here's a basic run-down of the story,
On the eastern seaboard somewhere in Florida, the fire dept in that City/Town have their departments along the coast and they serve the function of Lifeguards, And they sit diligently and watch all the swimmers and other random activities in the area. When they get someone who drowns and they're running a code on the patient, all that they can say for themselves is " I Failed " and as all codes go is heart-wrenching especially if you lose that patient. And with that failure present they know they didn't do their job right.... Preventing a drowning and being a lifeguard.... they failed
And now with our side,
We get the tone and dispatch information " Structure fire on 1234 Sesame Street." and all that goes through our minds is one thing. " Yes we have a structure fire " and we go and we kick the fire 3 ways from Sunday, hurray we did a good job.
But in actuality, WE failed at our job....
Be proactive in your community! Be Firesafe and lead by example. Thanks for your time
