Recently in Marquette we have had a good deal of drownings and are relatively new to water rescue. I was wondering what other departments do for water rescue techniques and water drownings prevention. If you have any ways that could help out our department improving our water rescue or reduce the number of drownings feel free to share.

I am just currently reviving a water rescue program. We sold our old boat, as it just wasn't in good enough condition for emergency use, and are waiting on the purchase of our new one. I guess I am looking for the same things in regards to good water rescue training guidelines. I am essentially going off my many years as a lifeguard when i create new courses for my department. Kinda hearkens back to our thoughts that the fire science program to develop a technical rescue class for water, high angle, confined space, and extrication..... Hint hint, Dr S, hahahahaha......
To give an idea of what kind of equipment we have and in use to this day. Wet suits, fins, masks, life jacket with Co2, kayak, a rescue surf board, the torpedoes, and the newest and probably the coolest is the seadoo's that are under water propulsion units. I would recommend the propulsion units for the fact they have three speeds faster then one can swim, you can dive with them, and when let go they will float to the surface in a min or two.
Yeah we definitely are only looking at surface water. (I would like to get my rescue diver, but i suppose i'd have to start diving more.) And its all boat and rescue rope (Mostly for ice rescue) based. I am not sending any of my FF's into the water with a torpedo or even a rescue board unless they are full lifeguard and open water rescue trained....
Right, all the personal that go into the water are lifeguard cert. We don't dive we leave that up to the Police dive team, but we will recover the body if it is in descent amount of water anything more we pass it on. I have to say with little training on the boards and the kayak it makes a world of difference and one person can save someone. I would also look into ice water rescue the gear is different and the training is mostly the same.
