My name's Jim, I began a forum mainly for Pipe bands in the fire service back in January '07 Icalled SMOKEnPipes. I am posting this here, because after all while Honor guards do what they do and Pipe bands do what we do, often in the fire service, Locals have often Honor guards that support pipers or minibands or even full sized bands and obviously some Bands also support honor guards :) You will notice on the National Honor guard site that SMOKE n Pipes is listed in links because of this closeness between and interaction as well...I'd Like to invite you, if interested in stopping by and checking out the forum in general, But also invite you to feel free to become a part of the Honor guard forum threads which hasnt been terribly active... whether you have any interest in Pipe bands we would certainly welcome querries and imput and share with you guysand gals who have never had the pleasure of doing what you do , so well, with a band, as well as sharing data as to why we often seem to take over events with "demands" ..lol \\
we work together at many events so Its only natural to bring you guys into a forum like SMOKE n' Pipes... Feel free to stop into

If you have any questions, discussion about interaction between HG and Pipes and drums, feel free , as well, If your a member or know any other HG folks who play the pipes or drums or are involved please let them know about us. Thanks Jim

Hey there!!

I checked your site and signed up. I started practicing and had actually learned a bit on my practice chanter, but then I got going on my fire officer classes and bagpipes fell by the wayside for a bit. Anyway, I am about finished with my classes and my ADD is kicking in. I want to get back moving and start up piping again.

Just over a year ago, I became the commander of the Honor Guard for my department. With no military experience to speak of (I had drill instructors who screamed at us in the police academy, I don't hink that is quite the same), it has been an uphill struggle to fill the shoes of those who started the unit. But, I've had lots of support. I look forward to chatting with some other honor guards and getting ideas.
Heather I can't "tell you much" about the HG having never really been a Part of one, I've stood HG along side the casket and thatsMy only HG experiance in that respect, I have been the 2nd musical officer Pipe Sergeant of My States' 1st Pipe band and often Have found that the screaming, DI, doesn't accomplish as much... after all we all know why we are doing our respective gigs and one would HOPE that we want to be as sharp as we can be.... as far as having themilitary backround goes, I've found many guys who have it dont want to ajust itto the form we in Pipe band useorin general just dont want to do it at all, the ones whohavenever had to do it, tend to be easier towork with... My state started a state wide guard a few years afterthe pipe band and actually have "schools" from time to time at the state fire acadamy... They just graduated a class and had the pipe band play the graduation ceremony.... Thenice thing about the band is we are allowed a bitmore lattitude
although iour traditions are based upon scottish military traditions more then North American..

Piping, dedication, thebest thing I can say is geta few new CD's to get "pumped up about" ALL hands working is FDNY's newist album, Bergan Cty NJ ,Mesa az as well as many other Fire Service bands have recordings... they sell them as a funbd raiser, so support yourbrother bands andbuy one or two.. Highland regimental recordings are also available from various sites on line , YOU can check the band list or the vendors sites links on The forum...
