I am wondering if anyone has used something to color water so that you can trace the route of a "contaminate" flow. I've heard about that green stuff you add to ponds to make the water green - looking for something that is safe and highly visible - any ideas?
I work for a county Health Dept. and our water engineering guys use products like that all the time. Here's a link for what (i'm pretty sure) they purchase.
Never have used it in relation to a response though, and a quick review of the MSDS sheets will caution against mixing with corrosives, but a tablet into a contaminated water flow may not be an issue unless there is a lot of product. In that case, point monitoring downstream of pH may aid in tracking product or at least identify a point where you could safely use the tracer dye. Word of caution though, anything it stains, including PPE, will be permanently discolored. Hope this helps.
Being a Capt., weather buff, fisherman, Internet freek, I would use NOAA, has most rivers, you just need internet on scene !! This is to my closest river that I fish. take a look and find you river http://newweb.erh.noaa.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=btv&gage=ge...
Unless the contaminent is within aroud 3 or 4 degrees Farenheit of the water temperature, just use a thermal imager and watch for the contaminent trail in the water. You may be able to see product vapors offgassing from the water as well.
